About this item
"In Stahlgewittern" Introduced in 1915, the Gaede Helmet, also known as the “Gaede-Helm,” “von Gaede helmet,” or Stahlkappe M1915 (“steel skull cap”), was developed for German troops fighting in the Vosges, where artillery fire frequently sent dangerous rock and shell fragments into the trenches. Its distinctive steel forehead plate and nasal guard were mounted to a padded leather-and-cloth cap, protecting the most exposed areas of the head. Around 1,500 were produced by the artillery workshops at Mühlhausen for Army Detachment Gaede. The helmet remained a specialised form of protection until the introduction of the M1916 Stahlhelm provided German troops with a standardised steel helmet.
