How to Make a Roblox Game

Every Roblox game is built in Roblox Studio, the free editor. You do not need to know everything before starting — the path below is how most creators actually begin.

1. Install Roblox Studio

Download Studio free from the Roblox Create page and log in with your normal account. It runs on Windows and Mac.

2. Start from a template

Pick a template close to your idea — obby, racing, baseplate. Templates ship with working mechanics you can learn from by pulling them apart.

3. Learn the two core skills

Building (placing and shaping parts) and scripting (Luau, Roblox’s Lua dialect). Start by changing values in existing scripts — speed, jump power, colours — before writing your own from scratch.

4. Test constantly

Use the Play button to test in-editor, and invite friends into a private server for real multiplayer testing. Most game-breaking bugs only show up with more than one player.

5. Publish

File > Publish to Roblox puts your game live under your account. Start it private, polish, then flip it public. Icons and thumbnails matter enormously for whether anyone clicks.

Common questions

Do I need to pay to make a game?

No. Studio is free and publishing is free. You only spend money if you buy ads or assets.

How do games earn Robux?

Gamepasses, developer products and Premium payouts based on playtime. See our gamepass guide for the setup.
