Is Roblox Safe for Kids?

1. The genuine risks

Chat with strangers, user-generated content that slips past moderation, spending pressure from a currency kids do not intuitively value, and off-platform contact attempts (usually toward Discord) are the real concerns — reflected in ongoing lawsuits pressuring Roblox to do better.

2. The protections that exist

This changed a lot during 2026. Since January, everyone — adults included — has to pass a facial age check before chat works at all, and chat is then limited to players in nearby age bands unless the two people are Trusted Connections. Since June, under-16s sit on age-based accounts: Roblox Kids for ages 5–8, with communication off by default and only games labelled Minimal or Mild, and Roblox Select for 9–15, capped at Moderate. On top of that, a linked parent account controls chat, spending limits, screen time, friend permissions and approval of individual games — all locked behind a parent PIN.

3. The ten-minute setup that matters

Complete the age check honestly — it now decides which account type your child gets — then link a parent account, set a content maturity level, cap monthly spending, and decide chat settings together. 4. Reading the headlines fairly

The lawsuits and news coverage are real and worth knowing about — they concern cases where protections failed, and they are pressure that has made the platform measurably stricter each year. They describe the tail risk, not the median experience, which for a configured account is closer to a moderated online playground than the headlines suggest.

5. The conversation that matters more

The controls cannot stop a child choosing to move a conversation to another app. "Never take a chat off Roblox, and tell me if anyone asks" prevents the scenario the worst headlines describe — no setting substitutes for it.
