The History of Roblox
Roblox was created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, founded in 2004 and publicly launched in 2006 — making it older than most of its players. Here is the whole arc.
1. The founders
David Baszucki and Erik Cassel had previously built Interactive Physics, an educational physics simulator. Watching students play inside a physics sandbox planted the idea of a platform where users build the games themselves. Cassel died in 2013; Baszucki still leads the company today.
2. 2004–2006: DynaBlocks becomes Roblox
The company was founded in 2004 and the platform briefly carried the working name DynaBlocks before being renamed Roblox — a blend of "robots" and "blocks". It launched to the public in September 2006.
3. 2006–2020: the slow burn
For a decade Roblox grew quietly while the industry ignored it. The turning point was mobile (iOS in 2012, Android in 2014), then a compounding creator economy: developers earning real money through Robux kept building better games, which brought more players, which attracted more developers.
4. 2020–2021: the explosion and the IPO
Lockdowns turned Roblox into a generation’s social space, and daily users roughly doubled. In March 2021 Roblox went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RBLX via a direct listing.
5. The numbers today
Roblox now reports hundreds of millions of monthly players across console, PC, mobile and VR, with billions of hours played monthly and a creator economy that has paid out hundreds of millions of dollars a year to developers — some individual games have earned their creators tens of millions. The platform its founders built for physics students became one of the largest entertainment platforms on earth.
6. Who owns Roblox today
Roblox Corporation is a public company headquartered in San Mateo, California — owned by its shareholders, with founder David Baszucki as CEO holding significant control. It is not owned by any other games company, and rumours of acquisitions by big tech firms have never been true.
Common questions
The platform launched publicly in September 2006, so Roblox is about 20 years old — the company itself was founded two years earlier, in 2004.
David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. Baszucki remains CEO; Cassel passed away in 2013 and is memorialised by the community every year.
The early working name was DynaBlocks, renamed to Roblox before the 2006 launch.
No. Roblox Corporation is an independent public company traded as RBLX on the NYSE.
The earliest era of experiences included classics built by the founders and first users during the 2004–2006 alpha period — simple physics playgrounds that set the template for everything after.
